Sally had a craving for some chocolate so Sam and I headed to one of our favorite places Kilwin's Chocolate on John Ringling Blvd just west of St Armands Circle but 2 doors before we got there we found a new restaurant called the Surf Shack Coastal Kitchen which had a large open dining area and additional seating on the sidewalk out front.  We were drawn in by their $4.00 house specialty gourmet taco's.  We tried the Bangin' Shrimp Tacos, the Filet Tacos and the Jerk Chicken Tacos all of which were delicious and made us promise to come back and try some of the many other Taco choices at another time.  It was fun eating here with the family atmosphere, and "people watching" all the beach goers and shoppers. We found out that this is the second location of the Surf Shack having been started in Tampa by Ron Fuller and Steve Bishop, they decided to open one at the circle and is Sally ever glad they did.
Sally also discovered that upstairs from the family and dog friendly restaurant was a second restaurant called the Terrace at Surf Shack which has the same menu as downstairs including a daily list of innovative fresh specials.  In addition to a large restaurant and beautiful bar is an open air terrace where you can eat and look at the scenery.  I found it was an ideal spot to watch the sunset and have a house specialty cocktail. 
Did I mention they also have a piano bar with live entertainment every night from 7:00 pm? You know  we had to go back and have dinner!
The atmosphere that night was wonderful as we enjoyed the Jazz Styling's of Shari Morningstar accompanied by Regis Moreira on the keyboard.  They were great and really nice people too.
I began with the Seared Ahi Tuna Noodle Salad with organic Udon noodles, Mongolian sauce, cucumber wasabi and pickled ginger.  This was a taste sensation that I highly recommend. Sam enjoyed himself with the Guava Glazed Wings which went very well with a nice cold bottle of beer.
For an entree Sam and I both ordered a special that night of Copper River Salmon baked on a cedar plank which came with delicious sides of brussel sprouts and wild citrus rice. Every special came with Catie's Corn Bread which is made in house daily with their secret recipe that includes sour cream, creamed corn, jalapeno and jack cheese along with a few other ingredients that they weren't divulging but the taste was amazing.
The dessert, like the specials, change every night but the quality doesn't.  I recommend calling ahead and making a reservation if you're going to go to the Terrace during the nightly music upstairs and you can ask them what the specials and desserts are that night.
Sally says that whether you want to enjoy the casual beach crowd downstairs or the more sophisticated surroundings upstairs you are going to love the Surf Shack.
